Meet Jennifer Don

Please welcome Author Jennifer Don this week and make her feel welcome. She has written about what song reminds her of her book.

               If Words Could Sing
If words could sing, and a song can be heard from what has been written, then a thousand tales can arise from a few simple words. When written thoughtfully, a small simple shard of thought can be more creative and more potent than a rushed prose. But the question I want to look at is not about the songs that words could give us, instead I want to look at what song would best fit Timber Varden. You know what I mean right?

You don’t? Okay then, let me take this a little further for you. During the writing process of Timber Varden I spent many hours listening to one song and one song alone. And yet that same song isn’t one that represents the story that it tells. It doesn’t give you any depths about the struggle within it, the searching that continues throughout it. Nor does it give you any indication of what is felt from the characters within it. There may be small aspects of it within my novel, but not enough for me to turn around and say that it would best represent my book.

However, there is one such song out there that I can say best represents Timber Varden. Well, there might be a few but this one in particular was written specifically for another book/film. But upon hearing it last month, I knew that it depicted the bond between my two main characters and how strongly they felt for each other. I bet you’re now wondering what that song is, if you haven’t guessed already huh?

I’m sure many of you will be familiar with the film that it’s connected to, and as such I need not mention it here. The song itself however is known as A Thousand Years by Christina Perri. In which it depicts the love held between Christian and Amelia. It gives a clear indication of how these two characters feel about each other, despite what they have gone through, they are still deeply in love and will always be there for each other. Come rain or shine they will stand strong for each other, but they must first face the hardest challenge of their lives in order to put everything else back on track where it belongs.

Out of interest, as I’m sure some of you may want to know. Called out in the Dark by Snow Patrol, was the only song I could write to when working on Timber Varden. I don’t know what it was about that song but it seemed at the time that I couldn’t connect to the book unless I had that on.

Now that you’ve read about the song that best represents my novel, I want to ask you –

Have you recently read a book that has reminded you of a song?
Do you find it easier to write with or without playing and if so, what do you listen to?

Jennifer spent many years without daring to lift a pen, without writing a word that wasn't forced. But 2008 arrived and with it, her love of writing. She began with poetry which quenched her thirst to begin with but soon that wasn't enough to satisfy her. 2011 arrived with a dream to write her first novel - Awakening, which is on-going. November saw her attempt her first NaNoWriMo, and so Timber Varden was born, with the bulk of it being written within that month. Now she finds herself aiming to re-write that draft and turn it into her first published novel.

While she aims to work through the edits needed, updates on her progress can be found on here -http://www.facebook.com/AuthorJenniferDon
