A Haunting We Will Go

Welcome Paranormal Investigator and Author Stephanie Cambell

When the talented Stephanie Cambell is not writing books, she’s doing something I have always wanted to do myself. She is a paranormal investigator! In our second week here on our Halloween blast I asked Stephanie to share one of her current investigations~

Debra: Stephanie we’re all ears!
Stephanie:
The Ben Lomond Cemetery was established in 1851, and it is one of the oldest in all of Utah. This cemetery holds the graves of many pioneers who built the area. Today, it is the home to 15,000 burial slots and is over 14 acres.
But this place is more than just a historic site for me. In this cemetery, I encountered my first experience with orbs, and I have visited this cemetery over ten times for investigations with mixed, though still interesting, results.
A partner and I drive to the cemetery and park in one of the empty spaces. We struggle out of the car and begin to walk between the rows of the plots. Both of us are quiet and respectful. As I walk, I begin to notice something odd about what I was capturing on my camera.
"Come over here a moment, please," I say to my partner, looking at the screen.
"What is it?" she says, hustling over.
Both of us look over my shoulder and gasp.

The orbs appeared out of nowhere. Just seconds ago, I had taken this picture, marking the fact that my camera was clear:

I am shocked by the difference, especially since this is my second investigation here. Before this, I hadn't captured much of anything. Just some dust, the reflection of a stop sign, and a few other pointless things caused by natural phenomenon. The two of us exchange glances, move forward, and later pack up and leave for the night. This picture later got uploaded to the Weber District Paranormal Society's website, and I decided I would visit again the next week.
When I returned to the Ben Lomond Graveyard for investigation, I was brimming with excitement. It was a great hotspot for me, more so than what I expected after the research that I had done.
I walked along, alone again, with my camcorder out as well as my camera. The night is clear and is wind free. As I snap pictures, something strange begins to happen. Here is what I caught on my camera.

If you notice, the third picture and the fourth picture are both taken of the same street. That fact is shown by the small cylinder light in the left-hand corner of my pictures. The one thing that's different is the large orb that darts across the screen of my camera. I found this both startling and chilling. There truly was something there. This was not the moon or a stoplight. This is proven by the same picture being taken seconds afterward without anything on it. To this day, I truly believe that a ghost skirted across my camera screen.
Debra: Wow, that was pretty interesting! Thanks for making cold chills go up my spine! I will always remember to look behind me in graveyards from now on! Would you mind telling me about yourself and your books now?

Book Blurb:

Willow the tree has been watching her family for the past eight years.  During that time, they have endured a terrible trauma, but there is nothing Willow can do.  She is merely a tree.  All of that changes when Malan, the eldest brother of the family, returns home from college and Willow realizes that she would do anything to speak with him, and the feelings she has for him she cannot explain.  She believes there is no hope. There is no way to change from one life form to another. When a white dove tells Willow that she can trade her thirty remaining years of life as a tree for one year as a human, she quickly agrees.  But in making that choice, she realizes that she may have signed on for more than she bargained for. After all, a year is hardly enough time to heal a human heart.

Halloween Special Guest Ashley Nemer

I am happy to introduce a special guest today who has written a book you are sure to love. On Halloween night, curl up with Ashley Nemer's new book, Blood Purple and feel the thirst~

Blood Purple, the new Halloween phenomenon! Yeah I wish! Blood Purple fits in well with Halloween mainly cause of the topic and colors I chose. Kids love dressing up as vampires and running around saying “I vant to suck your blood” but my vampires, they’re a bit different. Yes, they do suck blood but not all of the typical rules apply. Some genre’s make the blood have to be human, others make it vampire some mix the two. Mine is vampire blood is needed to live but you can get by on human blood. The blood doesn’t need to be of a different gender, blood is blood. One of my vamp’s even stock piles his blood so he doesn’t have to feed from others. I didn’t want my stories to be limited in the normal boundaries so I left it open.

Another thing about the typical vampire is the stake through the heart. Mine…well, you can kill them like you kill a human, and it’s just more difficult. The thing about my vampires is, they are just like us, we, humans, actually were created by the vampires so we are created in their image. I know you are probably thinking whoa wait hold the phone, what?!?! Don’t worry; I’ll get into that all later, as my world unfolds. But here is my first teaser so you will have to stay tuned for more on how what we know as humans, God and creation are really nothing like we expected.
Now onto Halloween specifics. Did you have a favorite character to dress up as growing up? Me, I loved me some Wizard of Oz. When I was a toddler I changed my name to Dorothy and would only respond to that, or so my mother tells me. So you would think when comes time for Halloween costumes I would be all over that blue and white dress but nope! It was the Evil Wicked Witch of the West that owned my heart. See even at a young age I was prone to follow the evil side in fiction. This has not changed.

When I wrote Blood Purple, and as I finished writing the sequel Blood Yellow, I am still rooting for the evil side. I know they cannot win but that doesn’t mean you don’t want them too. My biggest issue in books that I read is that the bad guys NEVER catch a break. It’s like when I’m reading Black Dagger Brotherhood I just ONCE want the lesser’s to win a fight. Let them kill a brother already; let them have something to be proud of. While I didn’t want Xhex to die, I was really glad when Lash was able to capture her. I was like score they did something right. Cause in reality, Nice Guys Finish Last, right? That means the bad guys and sad things of the world come out on top at least some of the time.
So, that’s what you can expect when you read fiction that I create. Good will suffer; Evil will triumph, at least some of the time. Because as one of my readers said, I try to keep the emotions and drama to ‘real’ yes some of it will be out of the norm, mean we don’t all have knives at our throat daily, but we do experience heart break we do feel like less of a person from time to time so my characters will feel that too.

I hope you enjoyed my blog and I want to thank my host, Miss Debra Jayne East for having me appear. You can find out more about me and my crazy imagination at www.ashleynemer.com.

My new Updated Cover and Blurb!

Something strange was happening in Lily Dale. Marena Jacobs went there to search for the one true man that she loved. David had vanished over a year ago and she was beginning to think he was gone forever. The small scrap of paper with angelic script was all she had to go on.

Gabe, a man with psychic abilities befriends Marena and they stumble upon an incredible secret about the town’s people that no one would ever believe.

Gabe’s abilities are no match for Samuel though, who has powers of his own.  He is from an ancient sect of fallen angels called the Nephilim, and his one goal is to seduce Marena and destroy the love she has for David.

Karen Magill~Paranormal Romance Author Is Here Today!

This past month has been an exciting month for me. As an author, I have made a lot of cool friends and have been exposed to exciting new talent. A few days ago, I talked with Karen by phone and I was struck by her candor and her warmth. Sometimes, you meet someone you feel a close connection to and Karen Magill is one of those people.

Her paranormal romance called, "The Bond," is an exciting romance that will make you fall in love with Laura and Julian, two people who have an out of body experience and that develop a strong emotional tie with one another. There are pitfalls along the way to finding each other again that will have you on edge of your seats. So, I am happy to introduce to you, Karen Magill.

What inspired you to write your latest book?

I am going to talk about my first book actually, The Bond, A Paranormal Love Story. I was inspired to write this one because I was looking for a different way for people to meet. I have always been fascinated with paranormal occurrences and the supernatural so I thought why now have them meet in an out of body experience?

How did you come up with the title?

I felt that The Bond really tells what this couple has gone through. The subtitle is an explanation.

What books have most influenced your life most?

Lion of Ireland by Morgan Llewellyn is a book I read in high school. And kept reading! I was always enthralled with the characters in that book and how exciting the tale was.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Currently, I am starting a series of paranormal mysteries set in Vancouver which combine historical fact with fiction. The main characters are Julie, a psychic and Santoro, a Vancouver police officer.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I like Ann Rule – I always feel like I can learn something from her true crime novels; Stephen King because he is a master storyteller and I like Diana Gabaldon’s ideas though I admit I have only read Cross Stitch.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

For me it is getting started. I will have lots of ideas, make notes, do research but it is getting right down to the nitty gritty that gets me.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Keep writing and if you are looking at publication, have a good editor go over it. It will save you time and money in the long run.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I want those who read my books to realize that my events could actually happen in your life or someone you know. Just keep an open mind.

What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing it to life?

The Bond wasn’t that difficult to bring to life but Missing Flowers required a lot of research. I walked around the city and took photos and notes of where I was. I wanted to be able to describe places so that the reader may one day visit Vancouver and recognize somewhere because I had described it in one of my books.

Fun Question: What’s your favorite kind of chocolate?

Peanut butter and chocolate. I am now trying to develop a taste for dark chocolate since it is supposed to be healthier for me but I still love my peanut butter cups.

Can you share with readers your book  sites and social links?

Everyone Welcome the Charming Penelope Price!

With a Web On Her Face
by Penelope Price

Baby Name Books.

When I first started writing stories I went to the library and checked out Baby Name Books. I was eleven or so and the librarians gave me strange looks when I came back for different ones and to renew the ones I liked best. Eventually, I found some at yard sales (and much later, bought them from Amazon) so I could have my own copies on the shelf next to my poison-guide, police procedural walk-throughs, and various other reference books.

At the time, I liked to give distinctly 'appropriate' names for characters. I named the clumsy friend of my main character, Claudia, which means lame. She was a clod and thus the name worked. The haunted beauty with the mysterically green eyes? I named her Jade. Also, I liked mythical and biblical or literary names. Someone meant to evoke thoughts of the ever-faithful wife might be named Penelope (Jack, take note!) or if I wanted to conjure up images of a guy who would face unsurmountable odds and win - David. Things like that. Those names have their uses and places. But really, when I was using them, they were totally...lacking in subtlty.

These days, whether its creating names in some fantasy realm - Sarios, Damaiar, Lourdan, and Safyr - or in my modern day fantasy novel, "Incandescence", I really do not go looking for names. At least not for the main characters. They generally just organically appear on the page as I write. Hannah and Michael Brighton. Granmama Adina. Alexander. Summit. Shalisa. Evander. Jonas. Gideon.

Other names, I am not ashamed to admit, come to mind as homages to folks who exist in my real world. Hopefully they will be honored, not vexed, to find that characters such as Isaac, Professor McCormick, Jeremy, Zebulon, Rote, Nguyet, Emily and so on were named after them.

For important characters - names just seem to happen. For secondary, tertiary, one-offs, and other back ground types, I rely on... whatever is around. Phone books are great for surnames and placenames. Business cards, advertisements, tv, the interwebs... Anything goes. If it suits the situation and setting, it stays. If not - I just keep looking.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I do not have a real strong "process" for naming my characters, not anymore. If a character doesn't name herself, or come pre-equipped with a name, I have to go in search of it. Which is why my first drafts are often littered with OLDGUYNAMEHERE and ANGRYKIDNAMEHERE... and when it comes time to fill-in the blanks, well... I'll let you know. I'm still working on "Incandescence" and there several INSERTNAMEHEREs to fix.

How do you name your characters? Does inspiration flash while you're making up outlines? Do the names come first and the characters come later?

And while we're on the naming kick - how do you come up with your titles? Because WOW - I have trouble with titles. If you ever happen upon the WIP page of my website, you will notice that every single title is a Working Title. Because I have no idea how to name books, I simply refer to them all by a characters name (for example: Rudabet), a theme, a phrase that relates to the plot (ex: The Light of Lun), or even acronyms (ex: PASaRN).

So - I'm going to change my question. How do you come up with solid titles for your poems, novels, shorts, papers, series, et cetera?! Because that is what this writer needs to know. *grin*

Love & Rainbows,
P.P

Paul Beeley~Rising Star of Create Imaginations

Hello! I would like to introduce you to an exciting new artist who has an awesome company called Create Imaginations. Almost a year ago, I found some of his work online and proceeded to get him to do a book cover for me. I was immediately captivated by his style and his knack to understand my thoughts and vision for my book. His name is Paul Beeley and I am so glad to have him here today.

Hi Debra, thanks for inviting me.

Please tell us all about your company and what services you provide.

My company specializes in designing book cover art for independent authors. We create covers specifically for the Ebook market and for paperback versions. All formatting is done and is ready for submission to companies such as Create Space.

Paul, what inspired you to do this line of work?

I love creativity, to be able to tell stories through imagery is what I love. I first began by creating manipulated images for my then 3 year old son, placing him with characters he loved (Star Wars, Dragons and his favourite super heroes). His friends would see the pictures and want one. So, I originally set up personalized images for people and that was the basis for my company. I always created images for fun, having a story in my head and then portraying this in a digital format was my true escapism. I used the website Flickr to showcase these images, and was always met with huge applause at the upload of a new picture by other flickr users.

Creating book covers was a dream come true, it fitted my creative escapism along with helping authors from around the world bring their story to image form.

What is unique about your book covers compared to others who offer this service?

I am passionate about what I do, I get as much out of creating these images as the author. This is why my costs are lower than comparable companies, and why the attention to detail is far and above what others create. Generally I spent around 7 hours creating 1 image, and then some more for final tweaks.

I always pride myself on a good working relationship with all the authors I have worked with, being flexible and always wanting the author to have the WOW factor when seeing the image in its finished state.

I never use templates, so all the covers are completely unique to the story. This uniqueness comes from regular email contact with  the author and I have the ability to envisage what the author sees as there imagined story.

I understand one of the book covers you did for an author got attention and that book is going to be made into a motion picture. Can you tell us about that and why she contacted you in the first place?

I received an email from the US author, Sherry Gammon, and she was interested in my work and was curious as to whether I would be interested in creating a cover for her new book, “Unlovable.” So, I admitted to never doing this before, but with a bit of research I created it. She absolutely loved it! Her sales for the book went through the roof and is currently in the process of having the book made into a major US movie. I am not saying it is purely down to the cover I created, as the story is fantastic, but certainly helped getting those orders of the shelf so to speak. I have built a great working relationship with Sherry over the past year, and she is always keen to recommend me in all the literature circles she is in.

Give us a little more detail about the other fun things you do on Create Imaginations and an example of that work.

Going back to what I touched on at the start of this interview, I love creating images for fun. Exploring my own imagination and then working on that image. Here is an image I created for the last World cup soccer tournament, of the dog with the two lions in the background, representing Britain’s three lions. Although not intentionally for sale, I had someone approach me and actually bought the image, first print I ever sold.

If someone pays for a book cover, just exactly what do they get for their money?

Ok, for an E-book cover the price is £55 { approx. $86.00 US currency} plus £3 for the paypal fees. What you get is a formatted digital image in both PDF and jpg form. All typography is included, if you wish you can choose whatever font you like.
For the printable paperback/hardback version it is £85 {approx.$133.00 US} plus £3 PayPal fees.

This includes the formatted full cover (Front, spine and back, with all typography. The image is formatted to the authors desired book size with the spine adjusted to fit the page amount also). Covers are presented as a high resolution PDF and JPG. Also, they will receive low res E-Book versions with and without text. Also provided are three 3d renders of the book. These look great for online marketing purposes and really show of the book.

                                       3D Render

                                         3D Render

Both E-Book and print version come with the ability to tweak. So after we have decided upon an idea, I will send the author a copy to proof. If there are any tweaks that are needed that is absolutely fine, and never incur additional costs.

All prices are fixed and the author will never be charged more than the stated amount.

Are you working on anything new right now that you would like to share with us?

I have recently completed an image for a fabulous US author, Ilana Katz, whose book has just been released.
Currently, I Am working on a number of projects, one of which is a 4 book series for the fabulous author Cheryl Shireman. As much as I would love to post the cover here, I am sworn to secrecy until the launch. But keep an eye out for her book “Cooper Moon”, I have a feeling it’s going to be huge bestseller!

Okay, some fun stuff here. What is your favorite movie?

I have a fair few! My all-time favourite has to be “City of Angels” with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. I’m almost embarrassed to say but love emotional fantasy type movies. If you have had a look at some of my images on Flickr this will be obvious J

We would love to know where you live and a little about you and your family.

I live in London UK with my fiancée, I have a little boy who I absolutely adore. I also work as a manager in a contact centre, like to be busy J

Please give us your company links, social sites and e-mail address.
